Day 15. Berat - Dhermi
Beautiful day today and began with breakfast served to us in the garden by our very nice host Niko.
We set off about 9 once again through mainly agricultural areas. The farms look to me to be on a fairly small scale by our standards, I’m guessing that they would be mainly family affairs. We saw families in the fields - mum and dad working and children playing around the donkey and cart.
Passed through a massive farmers market which was obviously a weekly occurrence.
The farmland disappeared as we neared the coast and we stopped for morning tea in Vlore which is a large seaside town full of beachside restaurants and apartments a bit like the gold coast in Aussie. From here along the coast it was all tourist hotels and apartments but we are very early in the season so not too many people about.
The road then turned inland and up and over a very large hilly section, very windy and rough in places. Spectacular views down the coast from the top and a very popular spot for motorcyclists.
Found a very nice hotel in a little beachside town called Dhermi.
Went for a walk along the beach and I had a swim, very nice.
The people here seem warm and friendly, driving standards are not great but it is a bit slower than Italy.
Quite a few young guys driving very flash cars who are obviously too important to give way at intersections and roundabouts so my defensive driving skills have been tested once or twice.

Albania already...great riding along with you!
ReplyDeleteSeems like we’ve been on the road for a while but really it’s not long at all.
ReplyDelete15 Days?Well Robyn,i n NZ travel terms I'm a fairly experienced motorcyclist, with lots of multi day trips both on road and off road here. How-ever the longest would have been 8-9 days and some of those dayswould have not seen a great distance covered. So in NZ terms you've already been on the road much longer than most fellow motorcyclists will have experienced...and your trip has barely begun!
ReplyDeleteHi Russell, in some ways in feels like we’ve been away for ages. Yet we are still very much working out what works for us and what doesn’t. Still feels like we are just beginning.
