Day 32. Seyfe Golu. Day trip.

Last night we had a really nice meal in clay pots. The staff were very friendly and were interested in where we were going.

We woke up this morning to see the balloons above us again.

We headed off in the bike today to visit the underground city at Ozkonak and the Sefe Golu a salt lake. Tomtom took us on an interesting route to Ozkonak through back roads and farmland. The underground city is a World Heritage site and at times housed up to 30000 people. Only a small part is open to the public but it is very cool. Explored all the nooks and crannies and many rooms were labelled as to their original purpose. Seemed to be an awful lot of wineries! One of the main reasons for this being underground was so they could avoid their enemies. There were some very impressive round stones still in the original position that could be rolled across a tunnel entrance to block entry.

Not too many photos here, I got claustrophobic and had to go outside for a breath of air. Robyn

Back in the carpark we paid the attendant and we were parked near to where a new ticket booth was being built, the stonemason uttered the magic word Chai so we all sat around chatting with English, Turkish, and German we managed a conversation. They asked how old we were and appeared to be impressed at two oldies doing what we are. This deserved a Kai Pai sticker all round. Hooray.

We then set off to the salt  lake and got quite close to it but the road had deteriorated to mud and gravel and the clouds ahead were very black and ominous so we retreated back to Goreme.

Earlier on we realised we had made a rookie mistake in that we left all our documents in our hotel room. This is a serious offence here so our hearts were racing as we approached the inevitable check point. Luckily for us in this instance they waved us through. We won’t make that mistake again.

The afternoon thunder storms rolled in shortly after we arrived back coupled with no power or internet. So we went for coffee at a nice little cafe and booked dinner.

After we returned from dinner all services restored so planning and booking the next stage continued. Iran is still not certain so we plan to head for Tblisi over the next few days and make a call there which way we go.

  1. High oldies, you are obviously doing well. I loved Turkey and it's still one of my favourite countries. Been twice. Such friendly people. Cappadocia and the under ground city was amazing (1985 for us!). The food is great too. Love that flaming meal photo of Mark. I remeber going fown 7 stories in the underground city and loved the big wheels they roled across to keep themselves safe. You wouldn't want to be claustrophobia.....

  4. Brings back memories! Wasn’t so keen on the cave either, and the ‘rolling stone’ door. Pretty amazing...what an experience.
