Day 18 & 19 - Athens

Day 18

Housekeeping today.
We have shed around 10 Kg of weight ( sadly not off us but the bike) and more importantly heaps of volume. Plenty of challenging terrain ahead so every little helps.
Good workout, must have walked nearly 5 km with the bag before we found the "right" post office to post it from, and after all that, it was only 380 metres from our hotel!!!!! So maybe both of us will be able to contribute to the weight loss programme after all.
Spent most of the afternoon route planning our new entry into Iran which means we must go from Turkey into Georgia and then Armenia.
Bought a couple of extra T shirts today and got yesterdays lecture in reverse, "just because we're sending stuff home doesn't mean you can buy more!!!!"
Piraeus is a busy port area with mostly local shops etc but a smattering of tourist things also as the cruise boats dock here. Nice in parts, run down in others but a nice enough place for us to take stock and plan the next stage.

Day 19

We are doing the tourist thing today. Hop on hop off bus. Had a really good day very hot and tiring. When we got off the bus at the port at the end, Robyn walked off with the rest of the people "where are you going" says I, " decided to go on a cruise" says she.

Anyway we visited all the tourist hot spots and despite sharing the Acropolis with the passengers of at least 2 cruise ships we agreed it was worth it. I last stood in front of the Acropolis 57 years ago!

Couldn't resist taking this one, she just sat down - obviously had enough! (Robyn )

Timed it well at Parliament and watched the changing of the guards, very impressive. They are guarding the tomb of the unknown soldier.

Had a wander around the markets etc.

Apart from the obvious tourist spots Athens looks a bit tired and rundown and I think could do with a bit of TLC but as taxation is seen as an option in Greece I don’t see that happening anytime soon, they have pensions to pay for!
Good way to end the day listening ti these guys.
