Day 5. Bastia to Orosei

The ferry arrived  in Bastia around 6am. We were the last to disembark because Mark had gone for breakfast and forgotten the cabin number. Luckily after much searching found Robyn and the cabin.   ( Actually Robyn found Mark heading off in the wrong direction)
It was a bit cold and cloudy but it soon warmed up.
We headed inland to experience the famed roads of Corsica. Loads and loads of bikers but we had a great time and spent all the morning exploring the backroads and taking in the spectacular scenery.
Our destination was Bonifacio which is a very cool port town with a fancy marina and an old castle dating from the 13th century, built spectacularly on the side of a cliff, reminded me of something from Game of Thrones.







Our ferry left at 5pm. While waiting we met a very nice Italian dentist called Ger and a couple of Finnish guys. All touring on bikes.
A tour bus arrived and disgorged its tourists, and I had a horn competition with the bus driver, consensus was the Tiger won!
Short 45 minute ferry and its Au Revoir France and Buongiorno Sardinia.
Really great roads but some crazy driving!  Looking forward to a couple of days riding and exploring with Graeme
Judith and Graeme greeted us to their lovely apartment with a glass of wine and a beautiful meal.

    Looks so beautiful - mark getting lost I’m sure it won’t be the last time I’m having a dajevu moment!!!

Another lovely day -  another very nice breakfast. Sorry to say goodbye to this spot but needs must. A lovely drive along the coast on motorcycle friendly roads. Wonderful views and the roads fairly quiet. Arrived for coffee in the seaside resort town of Sarande, lovely little harbour town with a couple of visiting super yachts moored in the bay. From here we rode through a national park until a river blocked our path, for 300 Lek we were transported to the other side on a wooden barge.  From here we had about 20k to navigate over rough and narrow country lanes until finally emerging back on the highway. Quick stop for gas then the border which was quick and straightforward. We have loved our time in Albania and could have spent more time exploring this hospitable country. Auckland - Home

This journey doesn’t seem to want to end. Firstly we had to wait in the plane in Bali for 20 minutes so we wouldn’t arrive in Sydney before the 6am opening time.  We were expecting to land in Sydney in a few minutes when the captain informs us there has been a major malfunction with air traffic control and the landing time scheduled for us is outside the window of fuel remaining on board. So we diverted to Canberra for more fuel and a new flight plan to return to Sydney.  We arrived in Sydney 3 hours late and someone had parked their plane in our space!  Of course we missed our connection to Auckland.  We are booked on an afternoon flight, it could have been worse.  We had a lovely day with Paddy and Jules in Auckland with a nice brunch followed by a walk on a local walkway. Very relaxing in the warm sunshine. On Monday we collected the bike with no fuss, it was great to be reunited.   We then had a miserable  ride to Cambridge in torrential rain....

Tribute to a Tiger

I agonised for months about which bike to bring on this trip and then spent more months preparing it for the journey.  It hasn’t missed a beat.  3 oil changes 3 tyre changes 1 set of front brake pads.  The 14T front sprocket is badly worn and will end its days on display in my workshop.  Punctures 0 šŸ˜„ It has been used and abused, dropped, and ridden on many many roads and trails it was never designed to be on.  This kind of trip is all about compromise, sometimes I wished for a bigger bike, sometimes I was glad it wasn’t bigger.  It has handled everything we have dished out to it and not once let us down.  It is a miracle it hasn’t shaken itself to bits.  It has been a great servant and we couldn’t have asked for more.
